Our skin is our biggest organ, and it absorbs everything we expose it to, so why feed it garbage? I've been a fan of the Tom's of Maine line of natural personal care products ever since I was a lowly Pharmacy Assistant assigned to help stock the personal care aisles in my downtime. Back then I bought the soaps and toothpaste and such because they didn't make my sensitive skin itch or trigger my migraines just from smelling it, rather than a particular zeal for natural ingredients. But now that I know (and care!) more about my body, I know that I react in various ways to all petroleum-derived ingredients such as artificial fragrances, flavors, preservatives, and colors. Tom's deodorant is one of many natural products I've switched to over the years in my effort to rid my house and my body of artificial chemicals.

And thanks to Amazon.com, I don't even have to put my pants on to stock up on my favorite natural products! (Plus with Prime, I get it faster than making a grocery list and then waiting for the moons to align properly for a time when my kids are going to be well-behaved enough to actually take them out in public...)

Tom's of Maine does have a line of anti-perspirants as well, called Naturally Dry, but since they all contain aluminum, I personally don't use them. Alzheimers runs in my family, and even though the research linking them isn't definitive, I decided that aluminum was an unnecessary risk for me, just for drier armpits. Plus sweating is the body's natural way of flushing toxins. Why would I want to force that junk to all to stay in?

My favorite smelling one is actually the Men's "Mountain Spring" fragrance, but I use the Ladies "Refreshing Lemongrass" one most often because my 6-year-old loves citrus-y smells, and it comforts her when the scent wafts out as my body heats up. Plus I get more hugs and snugs! Win! Plus, since Tom's uses actual essential oils instead of artificial fragrances, the natural anti-septic and anti-microbial properties of lemongrass can only help with my virulent stinky armpit bacteria!

So to keep from smelling like a hobo by bedtime, I carry around an extra stick of deodorant and apply again later in the day, if needed. I come from a long line of persistent stinky sweaters... in fact my maiden name was frequently mispronounced as "Stinky." (Seriously. Feminism be damned, I changed my name so fast the marriage license was still spinning...)
I keep one stick at home and a second stick with me for two reasons: so I'm not wiping stinky sweaty bacteria all over my nice shower-fresh stick at home, and so that I'm not standing there nekkid after my shower realizing that my deodorant was accidentally left in the car from the day before! It's happened!

Tom's of Maine products are not only all-natural, but also cruelty-free and vegan. And most of their products are gluten-free, kosher, pareve, and halal as well!

  1. Online shopping is the best. I love being able to stock up on my essentials and not have to worry about leaving the house. #client
