The Last Unicorn

Wednesday, 11/27/13 - I packed Z a small lunch for the last day of school before Thanksgiving because her morning Kindergarten was having their Fall Feast party and I didn't think she'd have much of an appetite after.

One of my favorite movies growing up was The Last Unicorn by Rankin/Bass. Well. We didn't have a huge selection on VHS. We pretty much had that and Annie. I never really understood the movie, and when I was older and read the book, still walked away confused. So just the unicorn for Z. None of the weird boobie trees or fiery phallic bulls.

GF PBJ, organic carrots and apples
Just a unicorn cookie cutter on some gluten-free bread. Done.

I usually use a larger bag that holds an EasyLunchbox and her Lalaloopsy Funtainer Thermos. It's perfect for her lunches, but not cute. So whenever I use smaller boxes like the Lunchbots Duo, I try and use her soft Lalaloopsy lunchbox, which she loves. Little Sis was crazy jealous.

Leftovers to Lunch: Pulled Pork Buns

Wednesday, 12/4/13 - There's a Hawaiian BBQ near Little Gym that Hubby and the girls love. So I took some of the leftover pulled pork and made some mini po' boys!

Kindergarten Lunch
GF bun w/leftover pulled pork, strawberry applesauce, chocolate coconut yogurt, homemade organic pickles
I had some gluten-free Udi's dinner rolls left over from Thanksgiving, so I toasted them in the oven (broiled a few minutes on each side) and sprinkled some garlic salt on the insides. Then filled them with some leftover pulled pork!

We were low on fresh fruits and veggies, so I included a "squeezy fruit" pouch and some home-made fridge pickles (I basically followed this recipe, but skipped all the spices and herbs other than the garlic, dill, sugar, and salt.) And I had half of a chocolate cultured coconut milk (yogurt) cup left from Baby's breakfast, so Z got that as a yummy treat!

Toddler Lunch
GF bun w/leftover pulled pork, Naturebox Ranch Peas, organic grapes, homemade organic pickles
Little E got the same sandwich as Big Sis, and some fridge pickles too, but she got pickled lemon cucumbers instead of regular ones. Just for fun. (Lemon cucumbers are yellow and round, and generally not used for pickling. But I'm a rebel. And they don't taste like lemons.)

CuteZCute Baby Bento Buddy Lunch

I couldn't resist getting a CuteZCute Baby Bento Buddies Baby Owl 2-tier bento box. It's a bit small, but is still perfectly sized to hold food cut with the CuteZCute Sandwich Cutter! And just fine for a Kindergarten lunch!

Glutino Peppermint Yogurt-Covered Pretzels, GF/DF english muffin green olive pizza; organic apples, carrots, grapes
Tuesday, 12/3/13 - As you can see, the compartments are only a little larger than a muffin cup. I had an extra gluten-free english muffin pizza (with dairy-free cheese) and it fit perfectly in this little bento box!

Even though the bowl lid isn't really a third tier, there is a little space between the rounded inner lid and the bowl/outer lid, which is the perfect place to house a little treat.

I remembered to include a heart in this lunch by adding a heart pick in with the grapes.

Some "Special" School and Camp Snacks

January was surprisingly full of food-related activities needing dye- and gluten-free substitutes sent from home.

Braaaaaaains!
Dye-free strawberry gelatin

Z's Kindergarten had a week learning about the brain and nervous system. So for the end of the week, the teacher planned to make a large jell-o brain. Initially I was going to provide 6 boxes of dye-free gelatin mix, but I only had 3 at home, and that brand was no longer being made. By the time I tried a few stores and called around, it was too late to order them on Amazon, so the teacher and I decided that she'd make the class a dye-filled one, and I'd send something safe for Z.

Luckily, I happened to have a mini brain mold (surprise surprise) and made some strawberry vegetarian gelatin brains to send to school. I packed them in a Laptop Lunches Bento Buddies medium container and mismatched lid.

Day Camp Snacks
Dye-free gluten-free chocolate chip marshmallows, Van's GF Everything Crackers

A local kiddie gym offered a day camp for Martin Luther King Jr Day. Their camps are mostly for ages 3 and up, but they have a limited number of spots for younger non-potty-trained kids. Since we had just gone to an open house there over the weekend, and E had enjoyed herself and hadn't noticed I was still in the lobby until an hour later, I decided to try it out and sign her up for camp with Big Sis!

I packed the girls matching snacks in a mini pink lace box and mini black polka dot box. I had spoken to the gym owner and found out the other kids would be getting marshmallows and crackers, and maybe cookies or fruit. So I packed safe marshmallows and crackers, and figured if there was fruit available, they could have some too. And the marshmallows should trump cookies, if they were on offer to the other kids too.

"Blue Friday" Cupcake
GF vegan lemon cupcake, dye-free sprinkles
Since we're near Seattle, the Seahawks are our home team. So naturally the private Kindergarten we attend wanted to show their team pride by celebrating "Blue Friday." I was running a little late that morning (surprise surprise) and saw the snack parent haul in a flat of blue and green cupcakes. Nuts! So E and I raced home to get a safe dye-free gluten-free cupcake out of the freezer to take back to school before snack time, so Z wouldn't miss out.

Since I only had lemon and chocolate cupcakes in the freezer, I included some India Tree Nature's Colors blue sanding sugar and green jimmies sprinkles in a Laptop Lunches dip container (mismatched with Seahawks colors!) for her to make her cupcake festive and colorful like the other kids', after the frosting had thawed enough for them to stick!

(Gluten-Free) English Muffin Pizzas

Monday, 12/2/13 - I had a few gluten-free English muffins in the freezer that needed to get out to make room for other stuff. So I made mini pizzas!

The Kinnikinnick muffins are suuuuper thick, so I ended up slicing them into thirds. I toasted each side in the oven on Broil for a few minutes before adding the sauce and toppings and broiling a few more minutes to melt the (non-dairy) cheese.

Pizza for Kindergarten
GF english muffin green olive pizza, organic apples, kale chips, leftover GF pumpkin pie

For some reason, Z loved my gluten-free vegan pumpkin pie, so I gave her a little slice of leftovers with a heart mini fork. Not exactly the best pairing with pizza, but she was a fan.

Toddler Pizza
GF English muffin green olive pizza, dried edamame; organic grapes, tomatoes, sugar snap peas
E got pizza like Big Sis, but I changed up her fruits and veggies, and added some dried edamame, since she'd liked eating mine the day before.
