Dye-Free Preschool Snacks - Halloween Tricks and Treats, 2012

Tuesday, October 30 through Thursday, November 1, 2012

Monday she was home sick, so no snack. Which was a bummer, since that was the day the firemen came and the kids got to squirt the hose.
...Oh. I mean it was planned. There wasn't a fire or anything.

Tuesday
Mini bagel w/reduced fat cream cheese, red and green grapes
I chose one of our large round snack bowls for this snack. Mine came from Target's Dollar Spot.
To make it festive-y (since it was practically my last chance!) I stuck a pumpkin food pick in with her grapes, and used some silicone baran to keep her bagel from getting too moist in there all night.

Wednesday (Halloween)
1/2 GF roll with SunButter and chocolate syrup, red and green grapes
I spread some SunButter and Trader Joe's chocolate syrup (since "nut-free" means so Justin's Chocolate Hazelnut Butter!) onto most of a gluten-free Mancini's roll that I got from Whole Foods. Stuck into a silicone skull cup to keep it from getting moist against the grapes fortuitously looked like a brain. Scoooore!
I stuck a BOO! cupcake pick in with the grapes, and we were good to go!

I chose one of our large round snack bowls. Mine came from Target's Dollar Spot. I like that some of my taller silicone cups can fit in these.

Thursday
Pirate Booty, yellow carrot sticks, Ranch
Event though the Sassy Feeding Bowl was designed for taking baby food on-the-go, it's perfect for a preschooler snack bento! That little sauce box was from Daiso, but it appears to be discontinued.

Preschool Tricks and Treats
Cello bags, straws, clappers, rings, foam stickers, mini erasers, pencils,
assorted rubber bugs, large foam craft shapes
The "Trick" here is that most of the Halloween candy out there isn't safe for Z to eat. What doesn't have artificial colors contains artificial flavors and vanillin, which she happens to react to as well. Since I refuse to hand out something I won't let my own child have, I've been finding non-food items for holidays instead. And since we had planned to go trick-or-treating with my sister and her girls in our mom's neighborhood, we wouldn't be home for trick-or-treaters anyway. So I decided Z could hand out "Treats" to her classmates instead - and show them and their parents that you don't need junked-up candy to have a fun holiday!

I scoured a few Dollar Spots at Target and two Dollar Tree stores to find a great assortment of non-food Halloween treats to make goodie bags for her classmates. She has 18 kids in her class, including her, plus I made two more for her cousins. Some items, like the cello bags and plastic rings had [more than] enough for everyone in a single package, but others I had to get multiples. So I ended up spending around $25. But I am MUCH happier about these than I would have been about a $3 bag of dye-filled lollys!
And the teachers let each child who brought something to share pass them out themselves. She was more excited about that than the bag itself!

Which helped ease the sting of being able to eat virtually nothing from her Halloween loot. Luckily she had fun trick-or-treating with her cousins. And I had a stash of safe Unreal Candy and Surf Sweets Gummies and Jelly Beans for her instead.

The Gratitude Project - 2012

For the past few years during the month of November, I've posted "The Gratitude Project" - where I list something every day that I was grateful for. You can wait until the end to read it all, or follow me on FB or Twitter, or check back on this post periodically!
I totally forgot about doing this earlier, so I'm starting today! Feel free to start a list too! Jump in any time! At the end, I'll host a linky meme for everyone to share their list posts! (Or if you can somehow have your list in another public sharing forum such as a public Facebook note or in a photo file on flickr, and can post a link to it, then you don't even need a blog!)

3 - Today I am thankful for my MOMS Club friends. I don't like meeting new people, so I never saw the point of joining a group for ME. I joined when Z was 1, To find more things to do outside the house with her and help her socialize.
But I ended up meeting a bunch of great ladies, friends I can't imagine living without.

4 - Today I am thankful for The Little Gym. We've been going to one location or another with the same franchise owners since Z was around 9-months old. As her "quirks" developed into "issues," The Little Gym has remained a constant "safe place" where she could be herself and gain confidence in herself and her abilities. Where they celebrate her strengths, rather than fret over her weaknesses. Where I don't even have to tell the teachers how best to interact with her - they seem to know it instinctively!

5 - Today I am thankful that my little Big Girl not only got to school and home on the bus in one piece, she seemed to enjoy her new class. Whew!

6 - Oops. Forgot.

7 - Today I am thankful that despite my lax housekeeping and parenting style, my babies have thus far managed not to strangle themselves on a cord, suffocate on a plastic baggie, or choke to death in something chokery. Or permanently damage themselves from a tumble off our bed.

8 - Today I am thankful that tomorrow is Friday and we have no preschool. I am going to sleep in, and I will not be waking up early for love* nor money!

*Okay. I'll wake up for love. But at 1, 3, 5, and 6 am, love feels a whole lot more like wishing you had a dog instead.

9 - Today I am thankful that, while sick, both girls just have a cold. Don't get me wrong. Gobbets of snookies flying across the room with every sneeze is no walk in the park. But it beats the pukies!

10 - Today I am thankful that Z wasn't overwhelmed meeting my friend and her five (!!!) kids. I had been worried, since she doesn't always handle social situations well, and often gets overwhelmed in a crowd. But she loves birthday cake, Kiddie Museums, and her baby sister, so was able to bond over those!

11 - Today I am thankful for the brave men and women, past and present, who have selflessly served to preserve our freedoms. Happy Veteran's Day!

12 - Today I am thankful that my husband gets paid enough to support us all, doing what he loves. I especially have to remind myself of this when it butts into "our" time (ie: whenever he's home and I fob the kids off on him and "clock out.")
Yes, he's socializing and playing games all weekend. But really it's networking (making valuable contacts and relationships that will help us build our future,) and designing and playtesting games with other designer friends and game publishers. *sigh*
13 - Today I am thankful for: Ninjas!

14 - Today I am thankful for cheese. She is eating steamed broccoli and LOVING IT! YESSSSSSS! Why haven't I been adding on cheese before now?! I KNOW I've read it multiple places. But steaming small servings of broccoli seemed like so much WORK. And grating the cheese. Bah.

But it was easier and quicker than I thought. And her omnomnoms were worth the extra effort! SCOOOOORE!
15 - Today I am thankful for my friends. All of them, since I put practically no effort into maintaining my relationships, it's all them!

But today a shout-out to my bento buddies. The best group of ladies (and Keith) you could never meet! (Although I've actually met a few in person! Squeee!)

16 - Today I am thankful that my girls love each other so much. I know Z will outgrow her baby sis soon enough, but for now she's like a second mama.

Except she thwarts my efforts to make Baby try and do things on her own! Trying to encourage Baby to crawl, I would put toys just out of her reach. She'd mewl for them, and Big Sis would come running from the other end of the house "There, there, Little One. I'm here. Here's your toy!" then rocket back to whatever she had been doing!
And of course Baby idolizes her Big Sis!

17 -
Today I am thankful that my little girl is making friends. Last year was the first time she's been interested in her peers, despite seeing the same kids over several years through my moms club and co-op preschool. At her drop-off preschool last year, suddenly she was talking about other kids and what they were doing. This year is more of the same at that school, and I'm loving that not only does she like some of them, but THEY like HER too!

And it's nice finally getting invited to birthday parties again.

18 -
Today I am thankful that I'm not a sucker. Because my baby is VERY tricksy. If I tell her she can't have any of my chocolate, you would think she had just been slapped the way she caterwauls. She has learned VERY quickly how hard she has to cry to get what she needs, so has moved it from NEEDS to WANTS.

19 - Today I am thankful that I get exclusive private performances of the songs she's learning at preschool for her upcoming Fall Feast pageant. Especially as I may have to miss the performance if I can't get a sitter for Baby.

20 - Today I am thankful that my littlest one hasn't killed herself yet. She's certainly trying her best! My first one never explored kitchen or bathroom cupboards. Or tried to eat out of the garbage (*just the cat box that one time.) Or chewed on electric cords. Or crawled head-first off the bed (*while awake.)
All that crazy stuff you hear about weird ways kids die, or bizarre reasons a toy was recalled, that's all the stuff this one is going to do! I'm not prepared for this kind of kid! I'm far too lax and lazy!
21 - Today I am thankful that my husband supports my "art." He puts up with mounds of bento gear, washes fiddly little things (with no "accidental" losses down the disposal so far!) and even takes pictures of them for me when I can't!

22 - (Thanksgiving Day) Today I am thankful for Family. I am thankful that I love my in-laws, and they love me. I am thankful that my family all gets along (more or less.) And I am especially thankful for my husband and two little miracles. I cannot imagine life without them.

23 - I don't know if I'll be thankful for anything today. After 2 nights of Baby waking constantly, and less than 8 hours sleep (VERY interrupted) between the two nights, for all I know I'm typing jibberish.

24 - Today I am thankful that not only did Baby sleep "normally" last night (only woke up for her 2am and 6am feedings,) but it was my day to sleep in, so Hubby took over at 6, and let me sleep until 11! Ahhhh!

Handy Pandas Bento

Monday, 10/22/12 - We haven't been able to go to the baby class at Little Gym because each location near us only offered one time slot for the littlest babies, and one conflicted with Z's preschool, and the other with E's. So we skipped most of September and October, until E finally reached 10-months-old and could move to the next class, with more time slots! This was our first day in her new 10-19-months class with {much} older kiddos. So I packed our EasyLunchboxes, since Z would need a lunch to eat between Baby's gym class and preschool.

I randomly chose panda picks after putting grapes in a flower cup. I just wasn't feeling Halloween-y!

Handy Pandas
Sensible Foods Dried Corn, red grapes, ham on artisan Rosemary Bread, string cheese nibblets, Horizon Organics milk
Pin It

It all started with the flower cup. I've seen someone put one in the medium compartment of the EasyLunchbox before, so when I was deciding what I wanted to do with her lunch, I kind of glommed onto that idea. Then I arranged the grapes to look neat and tidy, like seeds almost. Or whatever those fluffy bits are inside the petals on a daisy. Since I didn't have the cute little insect picks that I want, I went with pandas. They like flowers, right?

I decided to finally try the Sensible Foods Dried Corn sample that I got in my Love With Food box a few months back. I put them in a silicone cup to help fill the space more, and to add a splash of color.

The artisan Rosemary Bread is Z's and my favorite. We often eat half the loaf right there at the farm, if we're not in a hurry. Our favorite part is the stripe of kosher salt across the top. Yum! I put some ham on her bread, and instead of slicing cheese, I filled a scalloped cup (from World Market) with some string cheese nibblets instead.
I rounded her lunch off with a Horizon Organics milk box (I believe their cows have a GMO-free diet, and because they're organic, I don't have to worry about hormones and pesticides and whatever else building up in my pint-sized cutie over time.) Plus a re-usable cloth napkin from Red Poppy Crafts on Etsy. 4/$5 (plus shipping) is pretty awesome, and she has so many cute prints to choose from! I had to buy a special box just to house my growing collection! I don't have any panda ones, so I chose a black and white dalmation or cow  print to at least keep the color scheme going.

She ate everything but the dried corn. She didn't like it, which surprised me. It was very sweet and tasty. But possibly for her it was a texture issue, since she tends not to like dried or freeze-dried fruit, and it may have gotten a little chewy after sitting in the fridge overnight. *I* managed to eat it up without a fuss though!

Mama's Lunch
Buttered Rosemary Bread, concord grapes, cherry tomatoes; red lettuce salad with canned
beans, grapes, weird-looking cauliflower, Parmesan, raisins, chia seeds, and dried edamame
I housed the soy beans, chia seeds, raisins, and grated Parmesan in my Mini Dipper. I can't remember the name of that weird alien-looking cauliflower, but when I saw it at the farm stand, I HAD to have it!

The Ghostest With the Mostest! Bento

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 - Baby's co-op preschool class was Halloween morning, so I packed Z a lunch to serve as breakfast and lunch (to nibble during and after Baby's class,) plus a breakfast for me to munch on during class, plus a lunch to prevent me from folding like a wet noodle and heading to McDs after dropping Z off at her preschool in the afternoon.

Mama's Not-So-Spooky Lunch
Grapes, tomatoes, 1/2  buttered GF roll; spinach and red lettuce salad w/strawberries,
raisins, carrot peels, dried soy beans, sunflower and chia seeds, and raspberry vinaigrette
I got to attend a Taste of Thanksgiving preview at Whole Foods Market, and in my "goodie bag" I received some Manini's gluten-free Peasant Rolls, which were "rolled out" (hahaha!) for the Thanksgiving holiday. [Pssst! Keeley! Peanut-Free facility too! And they specialize in mixes!] They are quite good, and taste like "real bread." Croissants, actually. Mmmmm! I was warned that these have a short shelf-life (since they do not contain preservatives) and don't freeze well, so I'm using them up as fast as I can. Omnomnom! I'm really taking one for the team here... Since I only had room for half a buttered roll, the other half went into my breakfast box.

The dried soy beans, sunflower seeds, and chia seeds went into the Mini Dipper box. I forgot to leave room for the raisins, so they spent the night in a bed of lettuce. I couldn't find a clean container and lid for the dressing, so I risked the spillover with a mini muffin cup. It did end up leaking into the salad, but this time I learned my lesson and positioned it away from the other compartments! I forgot to account for leakage onto the fork though. Ick. Luckily I had extra napkins in the car. Not from McDonalds. No, really.

*For the sake of full disclosure, I caved anyway and had McDonalds instead. [FOR SHAME!]
My salad made a tasty lunch for the next day. And hey! I had spare napkins handy...

The Most Ghosts
Chobani Honey-Nana yogurt, strawberries, Ranch, home-made marshmallow fluff,
yellow carrots, SunButter-honey sandwich; chocolate chip features
Yo-Yo-Ghost: I was too lazy to dig out the big tub of vanilla yogurt I thought it would be more fun to use one of her favorite Chobani Champions Greek yogurt flavors, Honey-Nana, so I poured the whole thing into the smaller EasyLunchbox compartment, and added some Nestle chocolate chips (says "all-natural" right on the package! No fake vanilla!) to make a ghost face on top.

Ghostly Carrots: Since the yellow carrots were a little ghostlier, I cut one up into sticks and included a mini silicone cup with Ranch dressing to dip. I added a ghost food pick because I couldn't resist jamming yet another ghost into this lunch! To keep the sandwich from getting too soggy sitting next to the carrot sticks all night, I used a washable silicone baran to separate them.

Berry Simple Ghosts: For the strawberries, I added a silicone pumpkin cup with some home-made MOMables Marshmallow Fluff (made with local raw honey, so it even helps with our allergies!) for her to dip to make "Ghostberries." I added chocolate chips to the fluff to make a ghost face, and spread some fluff onto one berry with some regular and mini chocolate chip features. I'd tried dipping it, but instead of a nice layer of fluff, I'd left all the little strawberry hairs behind! Doh!

OoOoOoOoooo Sandwich: Since she'd be eating this at a nut-free school I chose SunButter and honey (she only likes SunButter with honey) and used a ghost cookie cutter on the bread. Regular and mini chocolate chips for the face.

This was all packed the night before, and it held up really well. And I actually remembered to include the cloth napkin for the photo this time! (I usually forget and grab one on our way out the door.) I chose the only Halloween-y one that I own, with a candy corn pattern, bought from Red Poppy Crafts on Etsy. I have put in requests for pumpkin-y, spider-y and ghost-y ones to plan ahead for next year! The spoon for the yogurt (also another near-miss in the "almost-forgot-to-pack" category) is just some bajillion-per-package BPA-free baby spoon. She likes stealing using the baby's feeding tools.

She was super excited to begin digging in on the way to E's school that morning. She opens the box and starts getting all excited about the different ghosts. "I love all your imaginations, Mama!"
While eating the chocolate chips out of the fluff, she decides she doesn't like it. "Only on s'mores, Mama." Oh well. That takes care of worrying that there's too much extra sugar in there, what with the sweetened yogurt and chocolate chips! She only ended up eating the yogurt and strawberries. And the chocolate chips, of course. After pulling them off the sandwich to make a "Wanch ghost" first. Blech.

Mama's Breakfast Box
"Everything" bagel w/low-fat cream cheese, SunButter on bread scraps,
1/2 buttered GF roll
I included the bread scraps from Z's ghost sandwich with some SunButter on them for Baby. She loved them, and it kept her off me while I ate my bagel.

The bagel and roll were for me. I toasted the bagel first, and spread the reduced-fat cream cheese the night before. It makes the bagel extra chewy, which I like. The reduced fat cream cheese isn't as nasty tasting as the non-fat, so I may switch to this. Plus every brand of non-fat I could find at the regular grocery stores had fake colors (!!!) Trader Joe's might have a safe version though.

Z's school wasn't doing anything costume-y for Halloween, and she turned down my offer to let her use my eye liner on her face to go as Wonder Wish Kitty Girl just for fun. And I didn't get any trick-or-treating pictures, since I was hornswoggled into carrying the baby the whole time* (I had requested we bring the stroller, and Hubby said HE'D carry her. Harumph!) So here's a picture of Baby in her costume at preschool that morning. Awwwwww!
[This was actually Z's first costume! It's a 3-month size, but was a tad big on Z back when she was ~5-months. Baby E is soooo small. She's 10-months, wearing 6-months now. And other than the legs on the costume being a tad short, she fit this 3-month outfit perfectly. *sigh* At least she's not too heavy to carry everywhere...]

For the record, Z did amazingly well for her first time going door-to-door. (At the mall they tend to try and move you through the line quickly, so don't let the child choose from the bucket as often, and less trying to engage the child. So Z was able to be fairly successful there the past few years. No one tried to talk to her or make her talk to them. All she had to do was leave Mama long enough to get candy. How sad is it that I'm excited that my child will take candy from strangers?)
She not only (mostly) remembered to say "Trick or Treat," she also did a great job remembering to say "thank you." And after only one admonishment, only took one candy at each house, unless invited to take more. (Unless they had two bowls. Then she'd take one from each. Understandable confusion.) And she didn't freak out when people spoke to her or looked at her! It helped that the other two girls were there, so most comments were more generic and aimed at all three, like "What cute princesses!"

*We actually took turns. But when I wasn't carrying E, I was trying to keep up with Z and her cousins. There was no time for posing!
