Our skin is our biggest organ, and it absorbs everything we expose it to, so why feed it garbage? I've been a fan of the Tom's of Maine line of natural personal care products ever since I was a lowly Pharmacy Assistant assigned to help stock the personal care aisles in my downtime. Back then I bought the soaps and toothpaste and such because they didn't make my sensitive skin itch or trigger my migraines just from smelling it, rather than a particular zeal for natural ingredients. But now that I know (and care!) more about my body, I know that I react in various ways to all petroleum-derived ingredients such as artificial fragrances, flavors, preservatives, and colors. Tom's deodorant is one of many natural products I've switched to over the years in my effort to rid my house and my body of artificial chemicals.

And thanks to Amazon.com, I don't even have to put my pants on to stock up on my favorite natural products! (Plus with Prime, I get it faster than making a grocery list and then waiting for the moons to align properly for a time when my kids are going to be well-behaved enough to actually take them out in public...)

Tom's of Maine does have a line of anti-perspirants as well, called Naturally Dry, but since they all contain aluminum, I personally don't use them. Alzheimers runs in my family, and even though the research linking them isn't definitive, I decided that aluminum was an unnecessary risk for me, just for drier armpits. Plus sweating is the body's natural way of flushing toxins. Why would I want to force that junk to all to stay in?

My favorite smelling one is actually the Men's "Mountain Spring" fragrance, but I use the Ladies "Refreshing Lemongrass" one most often because my 6-year-old loves citrus-y smells, and it comforts her when the scent wafts out as my body heats up. Plus I get more hugs and snugs! Win! Plus, since Tom's uses actual essential oils instead of artificial fragrances, the natural anti-septic and anti-microbial properties of lemongrass can only help with my virulent stinky armpit bacteria!

So to keep from smelling like a hobo by bedtime, I carry around an extra stick of deodorant and apply again later in the day, if needed. I come from a long line of persistent stinky sweaters... in fact my maiden name was frequently mispronounced as "Stinky." (Seriously. Feminism be damned, I changed my name so fast the marriage license was still spinning...)
I keep one stick at home and a second stick with me for two reasons: so I'm not wiping stinky sweaty bacteria all over my nice shower-fresh stick at home, and so that I'm not standing there nekkid after my shower realizing that my deodorant was accidentally left in the car from the day before! It's happened!

Tom's of Maine products are not only all-natural, but also cruelty-free and vegan. And most of their products are gluten-free, kosher, pareve, and halal as well!

See You Later, Alligator! Last Kindergarten Lunch

I'd fallen asleep the night before, so didn't have time to pack anything fancy for Z's very last Kindergarten lunch! Oh no! I'd wanted to do something clever, like at Bento For Kidlet. She has done geeky farewell quotes the past few years, and they're just brilliant! (See Kidlet's Farewell to 5th, Goodbye to 6th (which still makes me tear up a bit,) and So Long to 7th!)
But Z wouldn't understand any of those references yet. So I picked out a farewell she would recognize, and shaved off a few precious minutes of prep time by using a pick instead of spelling out the last word! Ha!

Glutino Table Crackers with sliced goat cheese, Dandies marshmallow; organic snap peas, carrots, apricot, cherries
I cut most of my message out of sliced goat cheese (no casein or lactose!) with some mini alphabet cutters, then "glued" them to the top cracker with some mustard. I was a bit slappy-dashy there, as I was in a hurry, so you can see the mustard where I had to shift letters around to try and fit or center them better. Oh well.

An alligator pick stuck in a Dandies dye-free vegan marshmallow completes the message... I can't remember what that's called, where the text uses pictures to fill in for some of the words for early readers... Pictogram? Or in this case, a pick-togram! Ha!

I tucked a 1st pick in with her fruit, to represent her entering First Grade next Fall. Finally got to use these, as I totally forgot for E's first birthday lunch! Doh! Now just need one of them to be into something competitive and win First Place! Hahaha!

I had a few carrot coins cut with a flower veggie cutter, so I used them to pretty-up the snap peas. Done!

Even though it wasn't a great match for the general color scheme, I chose the purple EasyLunchbox Brights lid because it's her favorite color. And this lunch was all about her, right?

My amazing child has grown so much this past year! I am so proud of everything she has accomplished, everything she has overcome, and everything she is working to improve!

We had her go to two schools this past year for a variety of reasons. One, I wanted her to have one more year someplace familiar, with classmates and teachers she'd known for up to two years at the private school. She'd done so well there the past two years, and had blossomed, socially and emotionally. And Two, I didn't want her starting First Grade someplace completely strange and new, with kids who had known one another a whole year already. In the past she has transitioned better with part-time at two different places - one old, one new - when we switched from the co-op preschool to the drop-off preschool. So while it meant I was pretty much tethered to a smaller area all day (since I had to be back within a 3-hour window between drop-off and pick-up at each location,) it was hopefully the best way to help her be as successful as possible in overcoming her social and emotional issues.

But that meant that even though the public school didn't do a Kindergarten graduation ceremony, we still got one at the private school! Woop!
She wore the hat for about 3.5 seconds total, and sat during much of the singing. But the kids did a few hand bell songs, and I was so proud that I cried. She not only nailed all her notes, but they'd trusted her with a solo bell - no other kid had the same color, so no one to cover for her if she opted not to cooperate or wasn't paying attention.

Stars and Stripes Chips Platter - Gluten-Free, Vegan Patriotic Beet Crackers

I've been sitting on this patriotic 4th of July recipe for a whole year! I made these Stars and Stripes chips and crackers (and dip) for a Fourth party last year but waited until the last possible moment to make them (seriously... I was frantically mixing and baking all that morning!) so didn't have time to make and blog it in advance. Not that I would have bothered... I probably would have just taken the time to take nicer pictures... Then sat on them for a year!

To make my Red, White, and Blue Stars and Stripes Cracker Platter, I made white tortilla chips and red beet crackers, then added some store-bought blue corn chips.
The dip is basically a dairy-free herb dip mix we got, with garlic and assorted dried herbs, mixed with vegan cream cheese and mayonnaise. I don't have a recipe for that, as we buy the dip mix at the Farmer's Market. But my kids love my Pink Dip, which you could make with dairy or with a dairy substitute, or leave out the radishes if you want the dip to be white. (I was in a hurry that day and didn't have time to roast my radishes. Oh well.)
Stars and Stripes Beet Crackers
1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
3 Tbsp water (plus more, as needed)
1 small beet, finely diced (roughly 1/4 cup, but a little more is okay.)
1 1/2 cup almond flour or sunflower seed flour (1 cup raw sunflower seeds ground in a food mill or coffee grinder should make 1 1/2 cups flour)
1/2 tsp granulated garlic powder
1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary
1/2 tsp salt (plus more to sprinkle on top, if desired)
1 Tbsp nutritional yeast (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
In a small skillet, heat the olive oil over low heat. When shimmering, add the water and diced beets. Cook for 5-8 minutes, stirring often, until the beets just start to get tender. Add more water a splash at a time as needed if the pan begins to dry out.

Meanwhile, in a food processor (or really good blender,) pulse almond flour, garlic powder, rosemary, 1/2 tsp salt and yeast until combined.

Drain the beets, reserving any liquid, and add to the food processor. Process 10-20 seconds to combine. Add 1 Tbsp of reserved beet liquid (or water, if there isn't enough,) and process until a rough dough forms. You may need to scrape the sides and pulse a few times.

On a large piece of parchment paper, form the dough into a roughly rectangular shape, then place another piece of parchment over the top before rolling dough out to roughly 1/8-inch thick.

Using a knife, cookie cutters, or pizza cutter, cut dough to desired shape. Using a thin spatula (preferably metal, as they're the thinnest,) transfer shapes to parchment-lined baking sheet. You can re-roll excess dough to make more shapes!
If you're just making squares or strips, you can use a pizza cutter to trim the edges and cut the lines, then transfer the bottom layer of parchment and cut dough straight to a cookie sheet (remove top layer of parchment.) You may need to cut the lines again immediately after baking - see next step.

Bake for 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees F until light brown around the edges and firm to the touch. *Turn oven off and let sit in oven for another 5 minutes to get crunchier.
*If you transferred the dough all together rather than separate shapes, remove pan from oven after the first 12-15 minutes, cut again with rotary cutter if needed, and separate crackers before returning pan to warm (but turned off) oven and let sit 5 minutes.

Remove pan from oven and allow crackers to cool.

Store in an airtight container.

Stars and Stripes Tortilla Crisps
3-4 gluten-free "flour" tortillas (corn works too, but may affect cooking time.)
Olive or coconut oil or spray
Sea salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

Using cookie cutters, a knife, rotary cutter, or kitchen shears, cut tortillas to desired shapes. Place on parchment-lined baking tray.

Spray or brush oil onto cut chips, and sprinkle salt as desired. Optional: Flip chips and spray and salt other side as well.

Bake cut tortilla shapes at 350 degrees F for 10-15 minutes. Check chips every 2 minutes after the first 10. Smaller shapes will cook faster, so pull them out as they start to brown around the edges and get crispy.

For both recipes, I used a mini star cutter until I was ready to slap someone if I had to make one more stinking star, then switched to a rotary cutter to make the stripes. And while you could certainly bake them both together, I baked them in waves, so I could cut the tortillas while the beet crackers were cooking!

Once I got to the party, I arranged the "stripes" as best I could in alternating colors, and then scattered some tortilla stars on a pile of blue corn chips. I may have eaten about half of them in the process... Then kind I of dumped everything on when I got bored with that, and wandered off to have fun with my kids!

Brew Over Ice with Keurig for a Cool Summer! #brewitup #brewoverice
I've lusted after a Keurig Single Cup Brewer since the first day I saw one. Back when I worked in pharmacy, I hated having to wash the pharmacists' coffee pot and dump out all the leftover day-old coffee, and wished for an easy way to brew just one cup at a time. It's like Keurig read my mind! But I prefer iced tea and coffee. Now they've done it again! Spooky! At first I wasn't sure how to make iced coffee, tea, and lemonade with a Keurig brewer, but I was quickly amazed at just how quick and easy it is! With so many flavors and low calorie drinks to choose from, the hardest part is picking a favorite! Or five favorites...

So imagine my excitement when the Keurig Walmart team sent me a brand new Keurig K40 Elite of my very own! And they even included a few boxes of Brew Over Ice K-Cups for me to start enjoying right away! My counters are so cluttered, there hasn't been room for a new appliance in years... Until about 5-seconds after I opened the box! I've never cleared a space that fast!
I love the Sweet Tea best so far - I think I just found a cure for my addiction to the sweet tea at a certain McDriveThru... My only problem now is that my freezer doesn't make ice fast enough!

My new Keurig could not have come at a better time. A quick way to make iced drinks will be perfect for cooling off on the 4th of July! The girls splashing in the wade pool, throwing Pop-Its on the porch; Dadda cooking lunch on the barbecue, and Mama sitting back enjoying some sweet sweet iced tea! Ahhh! Perfect!

And the best part is that iced tea or coffee goes great with any dish! Especially in an insulated double-walled tumbler to help it stay cold! (Do not brew over ice in glass, for safety reasons! Rapid temperature changes from cold to hot can shatter glass!)
You can find a nice variety of Brew Over Ice K-Cups at Walmart. Brewing over ice is beyond easy, but if you're worried that it sounds too good to be true, you can watch this video to see it in action. See? Easy to a T! (Get it? T - tea? Yeah. I went there.)

Just fill a 16-ounce (or larger) plastic tumbler with ice (or frozen juice or fruit ice cubes!) select your K-Cup Brew Over Ice flavor and put it in the machine, then press the 6- or 8-ounce setting (you don't want to go bigger than that or the taste will be too watered down!) Boom! Delicious!

So far the Keurig has exceeded my expectations. Easier than expected - my 6-year-old has already figured out how to "help Mama" brew herself some (naturally non-caffeinated) lemonade! And it's such a short wait for each cup!  If only I could figure out how to hook my Keurig up to the sink so I don't have to keep refilling the water! Hahaha!

Keurig has many yummy all-natural K-Cup options without any artificial flavors or colors. (Click the "Nutrition Info" link under the photo on each product page for ingredient lists.) And there are several organic and fair trade options as well! *Swoon!* (Just enter "natural" or "organic" in the search bar at Keurig.com!) And I love that I don't have to make a whole pot of any one thing that would take all day for me to consume on my own, or multiple pots if I have guests who all want different things! (And more importantly, I don't have to clean any pots or pitchers after!)

Maleficent Movie Snacks - dye-gluten-dairy- and (mostly) nut-free

Every month, AMC Theatres shows a Sensory Friendly viewing of a current kids movie. Z used to be scared of the dark theaters, and the soundtrack was always too loud for the both of us, so these were the perfect solution! And you're allowed to bring your own snacks to accommodate dietary restrictions. Plus they're great in general for littler kids who have a harder time sitting still and staying quiet for so long. I call them "Toddler Friendly" showings!

5/31/14 - The May Sensory Friendly Film was Maleficent, which I was worried would be too scary for Z, but a friend had just seen it with her kids and said it was wonderful and shouldn't be scary for my kiddo, so we went. I'm so glad we did! E had gym class with Dadda, but I don't think she would have been scared either. We did miss the beginning though. But by the time the big dragon fight came at the end, you knew those characters were friendly, and it wasn't so scary after all! And I loved the messages of the plot. Hatred and revenge only hurt you in the end, and it's never too late to try and make amends and make better choices. Both very appropriate lessons for my particular child! And like the lessons from Frozen, Love at First Sight isn't the magical solution, and True Love comes in many forms!

Mama's Maleficent Snack
Organic apples with Sunbuttermini Peanot CupsChocolate Pomegranate Honey Patty, chocolate mint creme squares, organic popcorn w/sea salt, Eli's Earth Bars Celebrate Bar

Mini Peanot Cups are nut-dairy-gluten-free, vegan, and have no artificial flavors. The chocolate mint creme squares are like After Eight mints, but without any artificial vanillin flavor. Or dairy. And a local natural market had a gluten-free tasting day with vendors offering samples, where we discovered the Heavenly Organics raw honey creme patties. My girls kept changing their mind which was the favorite, but the pomegranate was high on the list, so I buy them occasionally as a special treat.

Since I'm the Mama, I packed myself an actual candy bar. I'm pretty stingy with these, as all the dairy-free gluten-free artificial-free candy bars I've found are really expensive at $3-5 each. (Unreal Candies makes great all-natural unjunked versions of popular candy, but they all have dairy.) I grabbed an Eli's Earth Bar "Celebrate Bar" since it was closest to the front of my Mama-candy stash. Please note that these have nuts in them! Other than this, I packed peanut- and nut-free snacks. But I'm not a messy eater. I eat my candy while holding the wrapper, so I don't get it all over my hands which could then wipe nut oils all over the seats. And this one has whole almonds, not a nut butter, so again less risk of nut oils getting everywhere. For my apples, I included nut-free Sunbutter for the reasons mentioned above. Plus it's crazy delicious on stuff like apples and celery!

Snacks for my Little Muncher
Organic popcorn w/sea salt, dye-free candy cane, Chocolate Pomegranate Honey Patties, Peanot Cups, NoNos,
organic apples and grapes
I can't remember which company made these, but I found both mint and fruity flavored all-natural candy canes at Safeway last Christmas, and I made sure to buy a few extra boxes.

No No's are like marshmallow-filled MandMs... marshmallow blobs covered in chocolate, with a colorful candy shell. They are gluten-dairy-nut/peanut-free, as well as vegan and free from artificial ingredients. And my kids love them so much they snuck a bag and hacked it open with a pair of kitchen shears!
